All that Jazz… in Hong Kong!

Jazz is one of the most iconic genres of music over the last century. Not only is it soothing, warm and elegant, the origins of jazz culture are significantly rooted in the segregation of African Americans in the early to mid-1900s, making jazz one of the most historically charged music movements of the world.

Over the decades, we’ve seen innumerable artists who have used jazz as a medium to express themselves, their communities, their joys and sorro ws, their struggles and more.

Jazz originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans. While the first actual jazz record was published in 1917, its origins went back twenty years prior, with heavy influences from blues and ‘ragtime’.  It is considered an American Classical style today, but not many know that jazz even has roots from the music of Western Africa. In the first few decades, jazz had a number of unique styles, such as New Orleans jazz (the earliest), Kansas City jazz, Gypsy jazz, and later on, cool jazz (perhaps the most famous of the bunch).

While jazz may have taken a slight dip in popularity among millennial and Gen Z listeners, there’s still active interest in this charming genre, and it still holds its iconic status. All major cities in the world still have popular jazz bars, even if there aren’t as many as there were back in the heyday of jazz. Hong Kong, for example, still celebrates jazz in its full glory.

One such exciting jazz bar is the BB Jazz Lounge in Lan Kwai Fong. The venue was formerly known as Orange Peel, and it was re-designed with a new vision - to become the top jazz venue in the city. Since its opening, it has consistently proved its right to that title!

Every night at BB Jazz, you’re treated to the sound of a resident band. Local and international jazz artists visit regularly as well; famous and well-established artistes as well as exciting new faces.

If you’re a jazz fan, or are wanting to try out the genre, then there’s no better place to see some of the premier talents of the world, any day of the year.
