Relaunch for 2018: A New You In the New Year

2017 is almost over. It is time to reflect on the past year and prepare for the new year. In a cycle of twelve months, every person goes through their set of victories and setbacks. Some are on the personal front, like marriage, parenthood, vacations, health issues, etc. There are also events that happen on the professional front like a promotion, loss of job, raise in salary, change of career, etc., that can affect our emotional or/and physical state.

Several different factors come together to define how a particular year has been for a certain individual. Thus, it becomes very important to take inventory at the end of every year and see how a particular year affects who you were, who you are and who you want to be.

Once the long process of introspection is over and the efficiency with which goals were achieved in the past year and the reasons behind the failures have been evaluated, new goals can be set for the coming year. The new year provides an excuse to relaunch yourself and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

  1. Clarity is important

Before you start moving towards a particular direction, make a clear mind map of where you want to be by the end of the year. It can be anything as vague as trying to be a happier person or as clear as saving enough money to own a particular car in a particular colour. It doesn’t matter whether you want to relaunch yourself in an emotional manner or a financial manner, it does matter that you know what result you are going to work towards.

  1. Start small

Getting the ball rolling is the hardest and most important task. To make this more attainable, make sure that you start your new year by setting out smaller goals for yourself. For example, if moving to a different career is your final aim, make sure that you start off with smaller benchmarks, like doing research, talking to people, preparing your CV, etc. Once you realise that you are successfully achieving what you set out for, your confidence will grow and you will be encouraged to take on the bigger tasks at hand.

  1. Manage your time

Not only achieving, but achieving things on time is important. It is very easy to get tangled in other things that eat away at your time and make you lose focus. Postponing things only makes the set goal look distant and unattainable. Therefore, the management of time becomes of utmost importance. For example, if you are working towards your health and keep skipping the gym or continue to give yourself cheat days, going back to the proper diet and exercise regime only gets tougher.

  1. Reward Yourself

It is very important to work towards your goal. But don’t be too harsh on yourself. Make sure that you recognise the hard work that you are putting in and realise that things are actually moving forward. Taking a break to look at your success helps to keep you in a positive mood and thus motivated to continue towards your goal. For example, if you have saved the target amount of money for the month by not splurging, mark the event by preparing an elaborate meal for yourself will cheer you up and push you to achieve more.

  1. Bounce Back

There are bound to have a few setbacks, big and small, on your way towards the desired result. But it is extremely important not to lose focus of why you began that particular journey, bounce back and keep going. For example, if negative thoughts keep coming back to your head after every few successful attempts, the only way out is forward. Keep trying. Along the way, you will surely recognise the patterns. And even if you can’t cure yourself completely, you will definitely understand your mental health better.

  1. Ask for help

It is true that you have to travel the path you choose on your own. But a helping hand sometimes does wonders. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from people who you are close, people who are in a position you aspire to, or people who are qualified to help in certain situations.

Speaking of qualified helping hands, Soma Vajpayee, Mozaic and Retired not Out are coming together to conduct a workshop to help you kick off this new year in a productive manner, helping you along on this journey of relaunching yourself.
