With innumerable wine stores and cellars, and multiple fairs for fine wine across Hong Kong, Hong Kongers have had a soft spot for this elegant beverage for years. Indeed, wine consumption by volume in Hong Kong is projected to hit 4.23 million cases by 2020! The city’s export and import wine businesses are also thriving.


Wine consumption in moderation helps improve your “good” cholesterol, lower the risk of heart disease, and reduce blood pressure. This is thanks to the antioxidants in the beverage. At the same time, it calms your nerves and gives you a sense of joie de vivre.
Is it any surprise, then, that Hong Kong’s wine industry is thriving? Reds, whites and rosés… sparkling and still… Cabernets, Pinots Noirs, Chardonnays, Merlots… from areas like Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and more… wines in Hong Kong are as popular as they are varied.
Burgundy, like Champagne and Bordeaux, is the name of an area in France famous for wine production. However, most of us know Burgundy not as the name of the region in France but for the famous red and white wines the region produces. These wines are considered some of the finest in the world – which is also why they’re some of the most expensive! 

What is Burgundy?
Red Burgundy is wine that is made in the Burgundy region of eastern France using 100% Pinot Noir grapes. White Burgundy is also made in Burgundy, but it’s made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Over the centuries, Burgundy has become known for being the best land in the world for producing both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
You may have drunk a dozen Pinots Noirs and Chardonnays, but the red and white Burgundy are the most exclusive of these wine categories. Much like Champagne is the most sought after sparkling wine, Burgundy is a class apart from other wines made from similar grapes.


The difference lies in the territory – or as they say, “terroir”. Terroir is a sense of place. When you drink, you taste more than just the wine – you experience the region where it was made. Simply put, the concept of terroir implies that the land on which the grapes are grown imparts a unique quality to the wine made from those grapes.

About the Dinner
James Rowell, Manager of Corporate & VIP Sales for Altaya Wines, is partnering with Mozaic Club to supply the wines for our Burgundy Pairing Dinner. “There is a growing, significant minority now in which a certain level of wine knowledge is more or less de rigueur,” he says. “A realisation has also taken place that at lower levels, classic French wine regions may not offer the best option.” All the more reason, then, to learn more, in-depth, about the wines of these regions!


The Dinner is being organised at AnOther Place, a restaurant by chef David Myers. David Myers learned his craft under well known American chef Charlie Trotter and Michelin Starred Chef Daniel Boulud. He has had a career in his own right on three continents for nearly twenty years. David Myers has been involved in the opening of several restaurants in Singapore, Tokyo and California. AnOther Place is his first restaurant in Hong Kong. The six-course meal brings together some exquisite wines with carefully selected haute cuisine. The menu is as below:

Alain Chavy Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2014 paired with Pancetta-wrapped prawn, celery root, herb puree
 

Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2014 paired with heirloom tomato, baked feta, marinated razor clams and sudachi vinaigrette
 

Faiveley Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns 2011 paired with Foie gras de canard warmed strawberries, pistachio, lemon verbena ice cream

 

Faiveley Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2011

 

Faiveley Corton Grand Cru Clos Cortons 2011 paired with Japanese wagyu striploin shaved myoga and shiso, black garlic potato purée

 

The meal will end with scrumptious lemon curd custard and lemon balm cream, spiced filo and petit fours.
