Are you free on a Sunday in May?  Would you like to be out in nature and enjoying the Plover Cove Country Park in the northeast of the New Territories with other Mozaic members?  Then why not sign up and join this full day, guided tour?

We will meet at the Tai Po Market MTR station at 10am, then take a taxi to Wu Kau Tang, where we will start our walk. We will walk  through lush vegetation past abandoned rice fields and terraces and deserted Hakka villages. We then follow a stream through the valley to the inlet of the Yan Chau Tong (Double Haven) Marine Park.

At Double Haven, we will follow the coastline, to see old geological formations, dating back 400 million years. Our next destination is to the villages of Sam A Tsuen and Siu Tan where we will see fishponds and sheltered coves along the shores which separate seawater and freshwater.

We then will stop for a lunch break (included in the tour price) next to a former fishpond afterwards continuing our hike to the Hakka Village of Lai Chi Wo.

This area was once known for its lychee trees and farming. Deserted now, with only a few locals returning on weekends, or over festival times. The houses remain well preserved and the feng shui wood are home to camphor, autumn maple, incense tree and other specimens – it is said to be one of the oldest surviving feng shui woodlands in Hong Kong.

The surrounding waterways were famous around 10th to 14th century for the abundant and reliable harvest of pearls and became known as “the Pearl Pool”.  The waters have been protected since 1996 under the name of Yan Chau Tong Marine Park.

We will finish our tour in Lai Chi Wo Village where we board our ferry for a 90-minute ride back to the University MTR station.

We will meet group guide at the MTR station, Tai Po Market, oustide the Starbucks coffee at 10:00am on Sunday, 19 May.

We will then take a taxi to Wu Kau Tang to the start of our hike.

The hike will be easy to moderate, mainly flat of around 7km.  We will stop for a locally prepared lunch.

Once we arrive in Lai Chi Wo Village, we will take a leisurely boat ride of about 90 minutes back to the University MTR.

Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, if sunny, also bring water or a drink for enjoying along the way and your Octopus card for the MTR.

Included in the price:  professionally guided tour, taxi, boat ride and lunch with a drink.
