Jason Wordie - graduated from Hong Kong University, with a History degree and now conducts historical walks in Hong Kong, as well as giving historical lectures for a variety of local community groups and cultural and well-known corporate organisations. He has made his home in the New Territories for over thirty years and is constantly updating and revising his talks about Hong Kong and Macau.

His books include Macao – People and Places, Past and Present, published by Angsana Ltd in 2013; Streets: Exploring Hong Kong Island, published by Hong Kong University Press in 2002 and its companion volume Streets: Exploring Kowloon, published 2007 by Hong Kong University Press.  For more than eighteen years, Jason has had a series of regular columns in the South China Morning Post. His current column, Then and Now, appears every week in the Sunday Morning Post’s Post Magazine.

Our evening will consist of a 45-minute lecture where, we will learn something of the lives of women in nineteenth-century Hong Kong, Chinese, European, Americans, Eurasian, Portuguese and others. Most histories of Hong Kong tend to ignore – or only touch upon – the lives of women.

Some came to the colony as administrators or merchants’ wives, others arrived with the garrison; some women were independently-employed, others kept or staffed brothels. The public and private lives of Hong Kong's women will be discussed in this lecture, with reference to numerous better-known and more obscure personalities.

The talk will be followed by a Questions & Answer session.

Included in the evening's price will be a welcome drink and Thai snack food to enjoy.  Additional drinks will be available at additional cost of HKD$40/each on the night.

Historical Talk on 21 Mar 2019

Join us for part 1 of a 2-part series on women in Hong Kong over the years.  We will start with partially forgotten and very rarely written about, women in the 19th Century in Hong Kong.  Our second lecture will be on women in the 20th Century in Hong Kong on 8 May 2019.

The evening will start with a welcome drink at 7pm and a meet & greet.  Jason will then entertain us with a very interesting, 45-minute lecture with slides and funny antidotes. We will be served Thai snack food on the evening too. After Jason's lecture, he will answer any questions we might have.

Do join us at the Cafe Siam in LKF on Thursday, 21 March!
