Waking up in the morning: How to overcome this daunting task

 

Waking up in the morning is one of the hardest parts of the day and that’s just the beginning. Any human being, at some point or the other, struggles to wake up in the morning and get out of bed, simply because of how comfortable it is! You’re lying down, rested, groggy and snuggled into your covers.

 

There are few feelings more comfortable than staying warm in bed and getting up can be a dreadful and often daunting task. It’s hard to find motivation when you follow the same routine day in and day out. Moreover, we tend to have a habit of waking up later than we should, lazing around in bed more than we should, even though we have to get to work at a particular time.

 

This can lead to regret, because we’re aware that we could be far more productive if we actually managed to get out of our beds on time. And despite this, we continue to struggle to do so. How does one overcome this? With a few habits like these:

 

 

Don’t compromise on 7 hours of sleep

The average adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep to function normally. Due to various habits (and nowadays, our phones) we tend to stay up later than we should and compromise on the sleep we get. The best way to wake up fresh is always to have that 7-8 hour sleep, without fail!

 

 

Avoid caffeine 8 hours before sleep

Evening coffee is a hard thing to compromise on, but if you are able to cut down on (or completely avoid) any form of caffeine 8 hours prior to your general sleep time. It’ll ensure that your sleep cycle doesn’t get disrupted and that you’re able to get a more peaceful sleep.

 

Lights off at night, on during the day!

Light signals your brain to wake up or stay awake. This is why it’s important to switch off all lights at night, including dim lamps. In the morning, on the other hand, it’s important to get to as many light sources around you as possible. Open the curtains, let in the fresh air and make sure that you have lighting around you. You’ll be able to get up a lot easier.

 

 

Stretches and exercise

Admittedly, this is the hardest habit to pick up, but also the most rewarding. Exercising regularly helps release dopamine, often referred to as the ‘happiness drug’. Working out in the morning helps achieve a few things: You get your exercise out of the way first thing, you feel more confident and positive as you start the day, and you’re doing good by your body! Exercise helps give you a more positive feeling heading into the day.

 

Spend a few hours a day just for leisure

Working hard is important, but rest is equally or even more important. After a long day at work, make sure that you don’t bring your work home and dedicate the last few hours in the day to nothing but relaxation. It will help you unwind from the day’s stress and subsequently, allows you to sleep easier. Remove the weight of the hard day’s work from your shoulders once you reach home.

 

 

Waking up in the morning isn’t easy. People don't just struggle to get up because of laziness - so don’t judge yourself! However, do strive to get out of your literal comfort zone. Being able to wake up on time and be productive can-do wonders that you never even realized possible!
