Law and Order: Tourism Special (The Central Police Station Compound)

The Central Police Station Compound is a former police station area comprising seven buildings, three of which have been declared monuments. The first police station in this area was built in 1864, with the other blocks and buildings added between 1910 and 1925.

The Compound, and the Police Force in general, were essential at the time. With huge influx of immigrants from mainland China, it was becoming quite difficult to maintain law and order. Today, the Government maintains the space largely as one of the few reminders of Hong Kong’s colonial past.

The plan was to convert the Central Police Station Compound into a tourist area, making it an artistic hub with several restaurants and food plazas that attract local and international tourists, and that’s exactly what it’s become.

This is the biggest restoration project in Hong Kong history, and is now called the Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts. See if the cultural exhibits at the Tai Kwun Centre is the kind of place that you’d like to visit this weekend!
