6 cold beverages to help you beat the heat this summer


Summer is here - so expect a lot more sun, a lot more tanning... and a lot more sweating, too! There are few better ways to beat the heat and get past the risk of dehydration than with a cold, soothing beverage. Try one of these cool drinks (in every sense of the word!) to beat the heat. 


Basil Lemonade:


Basil Lemonade


Total time: 15 minutes

a)  Take 1½ cups of cold water over medium heat.

b)  Add 1 cup sugar and simmer. 

c)  Let the mix thicken, without the sugar dissolving, for 5 minutes.

d)  Put off the heat and add 1 cup of fresh basil leaves.

e)  Cool to room temperature and strain. Squeeze in lemon juice.

f)  Pour lemonade and garnish with sprigs of basil. Chill before serving.


Frozen Blueberry Lemonade

Total time: 5 minutes

a)  Add 1½ cups of blueberries, 1 cup of lemonade, ½ cup of fresh mint leaves and 3 cups of ice into a blender. Add confectioners’ sugar to taste. Blend.​ 

b)  Garnish with mint sprigs and serve cold.


Espresso Slushy

Hands-on-time: 20 minutes

Total time: 2 hours 30 minutes

This is perhaps the drink that takes the longest to make on this list, but we can assure you, it's well worth it!

a)  Place 6 cups of water and ¾ cup of sugar on high heat.

b)  Turn the heat off once the sugar dissolves. Add ⅓ cup of instant espresso mix.

c)  After ten minutes, strain the liquid and then add ¼ cup of lemon juice along with 2 tablespoons of lemon zest.

d)  Put the pan in the freezer and use a fork to crush the mix every half an hour. Repeat for two hours.

e)  Check the consistency of the mix: the texture should be consistent and not frozen (only slushy).

f)  Serve chilled in a glass... with a spoon!



Lemongrass Gin Fizz

Total time: 7 minutes

a)  In a cocktail shaker, add fresh mint, 3 oz Gin, 3 oz tonic water, club soda and ice.

b)  Shake and pour into a glass with ice. 

c)  Garnish with mint and lime.


Mango & Mint Spiked Lemonade

Total time: 5 minutes

a)  Pour 4 oz ice, 3 oz lemonade, 3 oz mango juice and 1.5 oz vodka into a cocktail shaker.

b)  Shake vigorously for 15 seconds before straining into a glass.

c)  Garnish with sprigs of mint.


Strawberry-Banana Margarita

Time to make: 5 minutes

Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes

a)  Place 1 cup of strawberries, cut in half, and a whole banana, completely sliced, on a plate. Freeze for one hour. 

b)  Pour 4½ oz of tequila, 1½ oz of triple sec, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and one cup of crushed ice into a shaker. (Incidentally, leave out steps a and c to get a perfect lemony margarita.

c)  Blend the frozen strawberries and banana slices separately until they're thick.

d)  Pour this mix into the cold margarita. Serve cold and enjoy!
