5 Cultural Events You Can’t Miss This August

Hong Kong is one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the planet, which significantly adds to the cultural richness of daily life. Boasting a diverse population of people from around China and indeed the globe, the city boasts a multitude of festivals and cultural events, catering to millions of people from different walks of life with different tastes and interests. Whether it’s a music festival, a book festival or a dance festival, the people of Hong Kong don’t need much reason to celebrate the arts! Every month has cultural events that garner a lot of fanfare and interest. Here are five such, in the coming month.

a) Alice in Wonderland: HK Ballet

HK Ballet

This one’s for people of all ages. Between August 17 and 25, get set to witness the Asian premiere of ALICE, written by Septime Webre. The ballet has been described as explosive, jaw-dropping, exciting, mesmerizing, and even over-the-top! Lose yourself as you vanish down a rabbit hole and witness the classic fairytale re-enacted in an exhilarating ballet!

Apart from the stunning performance, chic costumes, beautiful sets and incredible original score by the Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong add to the mystique of the ballet. Learn more here.

b) HK Reggae Ska Festival

Hk Reggae Ska Festival

Currently in its fourth year, the success of last year’s (completely sold-out) festival has led to an even bigger return this year! Bigger how? Well, the Reggae Ska Festival 2018 will see the biggest ever line-up! Taking place on August 25 at PMQ, Central, there’s no better place on the island for good vibes!

Some of the top artists in the stacked line-up include ‘The Toasters’, ‘Oreskaband’, ‘Rude Paper’, ‘Jado’ and ‘Beat Bahnhof’. To get a tease of that Rastafarian life, visit the Festival this year. Click this linkfor more information.

c) Chinese Opera Festival

Chinese Opera is majestic, and has built a global reputation for fantastical spectacles over the past few years. It’s a significant part of the country’s cultural heritage. With a mix of groups from Mainland China and even local Cantonese Opera groups, this event began on July 12, with the grand month-long festival set to conclude on August 12.

Perhaps the event that’s the mostmust-see is the Cantonese Opera’s ‘The Return of Lady Wenji’ on August 7 and 8. More events and workshops are set to take place alongside the Festival. If you want to know more about the event, go here!

d) I Love HK Exhibition

It’s no secret that Hong Kong is one of the most colourful, vibrant and happening urban areas in the world! The streets of the city are beautiful, with an incredible blend of Eastern culture and Western architecture.

This year’s Exhibition focuses on the city’s best Urban Street Photography. Get a tour round this vertical city and live vicariously through some incredible photos. Whether you’re an enthusiast or a professional, this Exhibition is for you! It ends on August 23. For more details, click here.

e) Royal Ballet of Cambodia

Royal Ballet of Cambodia

This dance form and elite group come straight from the Kingdom of Cambodia. The troupe consists of 14 dancers, 5 musicians and 3 singers. Once upon a time, this dance form was a sacred dance reserved only for royalty and VIPs. Now on the UNESCO’s list of Intangible Heritage, it’s coming to Hong Kong for the first time ever on August 25 and 26.

Princess Norodom Buppha Devi of Cambodia gave her take on the dance stepping outside the borders in an interview with Timeout, saying: “[M]y first duty is to revive the classical dance so it won’t be lost or forgotten, and to film and record the dance, giving it as a memory to the future generations.” For more details, drop by here

It’s incredible how a single Asian city can be such a melting pot for diversity. The month of August alone will see Chinese Opera, international urban photography, American-directed ballet, Reggae music and elite Cambodian dance, among much more! It’s truly a blessing to live in the city that has a mix of cultures to enrich your life, and help give you a world-view that you never knew you could have… so do take advantage of the opportunities before you!
