Detox options at home or away

Our bodies pick up various unhealthy chemicals or toxins on a daily basis. These toxins come from the food we eat, the coffee we drink and even the air we breathe. A detox, or cleanse, rids your body of these substances through a drastic change in diet for a short period of time.

As with most things, detoxing affects different people in different ways and there is no perfect one-size-fits-all solution that works for everyone. With a little information, however, we can chose a detox method that suits us perfectly.

A popular detox choice is to cleanse the colon with a fibre-heavy diet. This restores the digestive system. It is also possible to boost our body’s ability to speed up weight loss and get in shape fast, with an alkaline-rich diet.

There are both benefits and disadvantages to a detox regime, so please be mindful of these before you decide on which choice suits your body best.

Advantages of Detoxing

-  Improves kidney and liver function

-  Boosts energy and vitality

-  Rejuvenates mind and spirit

-  Speeds up weight loss

-  Boosts the immune system

-  Helps recover from bad habits like drinking or smoking

Disadvantages of Detoxing

-  May cause bloating, gas or diarrhoea as a result of a sudden change in diet

-  Risky for teenagers and pregnant women as it may result in deficiencies in certain minerals and proteins that the body needs at that developmental stage

-  Less efficient than the body’s own methods of releasing toxins, such as sweating after exercise

-  Dangerous to carry out weight-loss detoxes for extended periods

-  Healthy to use detoxes only to jumpstart new, healthier diets

Detox Methods at Home

One of the most popular detox diets and methods is the 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse, outlined by J.J. Smith in his book of the same name. During this 10-Day regime, you will drink only smoothies of various fruits and vegetables instead of whole foods for every meal.

Detox Green Smoothie

These smoothies are meant to boost rapid weight loss as well as provided added vitamins, minerals and fibre to help you get back in shape. You can prepare a very effective, easy-to-make detox green smoothie by taking the below ingredients and blending them together:

-  ½ cup unsweetened almond milk

-  1 tablespoon almond butter

-  1 banana

-  2 cups mixed greens (kale, chard or spinach)

Thecolon cleanseis another popular detox method and there are many recipes and supplements that you can find online. An easy recipe to follow is theGinger, Apple, Lemon, and Sea Salt Colon Cleanse, which involves adding sea salt to lukewarm water and then adding apple juice, ginger juice and fresh lime juice. Take this twice a day, once on an empty stomach and again a few minutes after lunch. This helps regulate the digestive system, especially when coupled with light, oil-free food and lots of water.

Detox Methods at a Spa

Although the detox recipes mentioned above can be easily prepared, and the methods can be easily implemented at home, more complex forms of detox can only be carried out by trained professionals. Most massages are good for relieving stress but paired with detox treatments, massages can boost immunity, replenish the skin with vital oils and minerals and even improve blood circulation. If you feel that you need a good detox strategy, go to a reputed spa for an intensive cleanse.

Detox Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a very common detox technique that involves essential oils being poured over the body before placing one or many smooth pieces of jade on the body. These are then slowly circulated along the skin. The movement of the stones rejuvenates the lymphatic system to reduce stress and stimulate the immune system.

Fango,or‘mud’ inItalian,is another popular method for detoxing at a spa. The treatment involves mineral oils and clay being mixed together to form a muddy mixture which is then applied all over the body. It helps remove toxins from the skin and increase circulation, and also helps release stress from muscles.

Detox Fango

In our 20s, our young bodies can take a lot of stress and damage from unhealthy habits and still heal back to perfect condition. Most people tend not to care about eating healthy or staying fit in the early years of their lives, and by the time we reach our 30s and 40s, we still cling on to some of the bad habits we picked up in our youth, like drinking, smoking or eating too much fast or fatty food.

It is quite difficult to drastically change our diet after years of living a certain way – and that’s where detoxes can really help. Detoxing can help cleanse the body of harmful chemicals, fat, and pollutants. In a way, it shocks the system, shaking up the routine to break harmful habits or addictions, or even help you completely change to a healthier diet.
