Art Basel at Hong Kong

Block your calendars from March 29 to 31 and make your way to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre at Harbour Road, where the Art Basel show will be held this year in HK.

The brainchild of gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner and Balz Hilt, Art Basel was first exhibited in 1970 in the lovely city of Basel, Switzerland as an arts event that would open the doors of opportunity to artists known and unknown from around the world.

The show was an instant hit with over 16,000 visitors at that very first edition.

The inaugural show had hosted 90 galleries and 30 publishers from 10 different countries. The seeds to a successful event had been sown.

Over time, Art Basel found another home at Miami Beach, Florida, USA then has been in Hong Kong since 2013. Over 60,000 visitors attended the first Hong Kong event, ensuring that it became a permanent fixture on the city’s calendar.

While Art Basel, Hong Kong, exhibits a very local flavour by becoming a hub for Asian and Asia Pacific artists, galleries and exhibitionists to come forward and showcase their art, diversity is an integral part of its make-up.

Along with catering to local artists and artists from the continent, it provides equal space and opportunity for foreign artists at the show. It has become a stage for local talent but has also pushed forward a dialogue between local and foreign artists, inspiring and being a cause of a flow of ideas and art across borders.

Another very important and commendable part of Art Basel is that it provides a platform for both established artists and fresh talent. It offers an opportunity for both to come together and share a stage, inspiring a two-way flow of artistic thought.

2018 will see heightened enthusiasm and larger participation from the community of art lovers. The city is gearing up to put on a show that will be an enriching experience not only for the artist community but also for the general public.

This year, Art Basel will feature 248 premier galleries. These galleries have been chosen from across 32 different countries and territories. The very local flavour of Art Basel will be reflected in the art galleries of Asia and the Asia Pacific that make up half the exhibiting galleries. These galleries will showcase the region’s diversity through both historical material and contemporary ideas of local artists.

This is a feature completely dedicated to large-scale sculptures and installations. These displays try to take art out of the conventional art-fair stand space and into open, uninhibited spaces.

These are just a few of the features at Art Basel, Hong Kong, 2018. There are many more waiting to be explored. Be sure to drop in and let your artistic self, take over.

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

The venue plays an important role when it comes to exhibits. It provides another layer of interpretation and meaning. That is why the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre or HKCEC has been chosen as the venue for the grand exhibit.

One of the major exhibition centres in Hong Kong, the HKCEC itself is a work of art. Its location on the Victoria Harbour puts it at the heart of the city. Phase 1 of this handsome glass building with its glass curtain that overlooks the harbour was the world’s largest in 1988 when it was opened. Phase 2 was inaugurated and the main venue for the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to Peoples Republic of China as a Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The HKCEC certainly lends itself to artistic display, making it a perfect choice for Art Basel.
