’Tis the Season to Paint the City Red!

Christmas is just around the corner! Deck the halls with boughs of holly and plan your weekend from the dozens of options that this city presents the enterprising Christmas celebrant. Shopping centres, hotels, theme parks, streets, plazas, buildings along the harbour, come alive with lights, glitz, gorgeous displays and the holiday spirit. Welcome Santa Claus in style!

 

1.Music and the Opera

- The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra brings a super-special performance to you every year: Christmas for Family. This kid-friendly celebration is held on December 23 and 24, and is guaranteed to have you feeling young again!

- The Hong Kong Ballet’s annual performance of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, The Nutcracker, makes for an elegant night out, with the last showing on 26 Dec at the Grand Theatre, HK Cultural Centre. This seasonal favourite is charming, heart-warming, and a great excuse to dress up!

- You could also take in a show of Scrooge – The Musical at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts until 30 Dec or Cats (for a less Christmassy experience!) at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Lyric Theatre from 6 Jan until 11 Feb 2018.

 

2.Shopping

 - With every mall coming to life for the season, there are options for shoppers of every breed – from holiday bazaars and sales at the biggest brands to street shopping that comes alive with lights and laughter in all parts of the city!

- Try the Traditional Christmas Market in Stanley for some great festivity. This year’s theme promises some truly polar delicacies!

- The Hong Kong Mega Show Case is a mega event with ten themed zones under one roof; the largest indoor Christmas carnival in Hong Kong. You can shop for Beauty and Health products, Vehicles, Food, Electronics, Books, Gifts, Toys, Fashion, Crafts, and products for the Home, among others.

 

3.Food

- Extend the Nutcracker magic with a special themed afternoon tea at The Langham Hotel. This decadent spread includes all the most traditional Christmas delicacies!

- It’s not perfectly junk season any more, but don’t let that stop you! Try a potluck dinner on a junk. Hire a boat and ask each friend to bring a seasonal favourite. Enjoy your turkey dinner against the backdrop of Hong Kong’s skyline.

- Try out the renowned Lan Kwai Fong Christmas Eve Street Party, with all the bars and restaurants staying open late and the party spilling out into the streets. It’s as good as it sounds!

 

4.Outdoor Fun

- Try out something different this Christmas weekend and earn that sumptuous feast! Take part in the HK Rally 2017 sponsored by HK Runners on Christmas Eve, 24 Dec, starting at Tai Tam Country Park for a 12 or 30 km challenging run around mid-eastern Hong Kong island in 4-age group categories. - On December 26, you could take part in the Boxing Day Fun Run, organized by the Hong Kong Ladies Road Runners Club. There will be a 4KM road & trail run starting at 9:30 and a Fancy Dress Competition too. While there are no prizes for the race, there are special treats for those who turn up in fancy dress!

- You could also trek to Sai Kung and over to Ham Tin beach or Tai Long Wan, where you can pitch a tent and welcome Saint Nick under the night sky. Just make sure your tent has space to hang your stockings!

 

5.Christmas Displays

- Victoria Harbour, IFC Mall, Times Square, Landmark, 1881 Heritage, Harbour City, New Town Plaza, Pacific Place and Statue Square are just a few of the magnificent Christmas displays lighting up the city this year, as in years past. You could also try out Hong Kong Winterfest, which includes a walking tour that hits the major Christmas lights and displays.

- Also check out the giant replica of Noah’s Ark, which is billed to stage nativity performances at 33 Pak Yan Road, Ma Wan, New Territories, Hong Kong.

- Don’t forget to take in the Symphony of Lights show which illuminates the Hong Kong Skyline every evening at 8pm!

 

6.Theme Park Festivities

- The happiest place in Hong Kong offers something really special for children and the young at heart. Drop by this month to enjoy Disneyland’s Sparkling Christmas, where holiday wishes come true!

- You could also take in the Ocean Park Hong Kong Christmas Sensation, which includes a multi-sensory Virtual Reality rollercoaster experience.

- The Great European Carnival is a fun outdoor event, including rides, carnival games, live entertainment, Hong Kong’s largest ever outdoor ice rink, festive food from around the world, and, this year, the Great Circus of Europe as well for a few days, 22-24 Dec – featuring some fantastic performers and world-class acts.

While Christmas isn’t a traditional Chinese holiday, Hong Kong’s cosmopolitan roots mean that the city has embraced the celebration with enthusiasm.
